BIHAR EDUCATION PROJECT (BEP)




Bihar Education Project is aimed at Universalization Of Elementary Education (UEE) with emphasis on the quality improvement of education in the State. This project was based on the achievements Of UPBEP (Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Project) and UNICEF. 

Government of India and Government of Bihar had jointly undertaken this project. The project lays special emphasis on the education of deprived sections of the society such as SCs/STs and the women. 

It is the first comprehensive externally funded 'Education for All' Project, initiated in three districts Of Ranchi, Rohtas and West Champaran in 1991-92 and further extended to four more districts in 1992-93.

Objectives of the project

  • Universalization Of Primary Education, viewed as a composite program of access to primary education for all children up to 14 years of age.
  • Orientation Of the educational system so as to serve the objectives of equality for women and their empowerment.
  • To provide equal educational opportunity to adults and children belonging to the lower castes, ethnic communities and poorest section of society.
  • To increase enrollment capacity of the education and reduce dropout especially Of girls and SC students.

Activities: 

The following activities were taken up by the Project:
  • Organization of Village Education Committees and community involvement in the program implementation at the grass root level.
  • Non-formal education through NGOs.
  • Organization of state level workshop: Training of key persons and primary teachers for minimum level of learning is given,
  • Constitution of core group at district level for women's development
  • Enrolment drives
  • Mahila Samakhya: To establish local accountability of the schools for teachers.
